Stampin’ Up! Butterfly Card Box

Snow snow snow. This is an incredible February! Yesterday was another day of a mix of snow, ice, sleet, rain. It makes for difficult walking for sure. Our dog loves the snow. He likes to roll in it, bite at it, jump in it. And the neighbors behind us – their kids and other neighbors kids were sledding down the hill, laughing and carrying on. They love it too!

Suffice to say – all that has nothing to do with today’s project… it’s a box for cards :O) And it has one of the butterflies on it from the Butterfly Bijou 6×6 DSP. I like a sturdy box and a lid that fits, doesn’t wiggle around. Having said this, you will understand both the lid and the base have layers to strengthen them. I also seem to prefer narrow borders, so they are 1/8″, not 1/4″ ~ all to say, card cuts must be precise. Shall we get on with it and take a peek?

Butterfly Card Box – #1

This paper – the Butterfly Bijou 6×6 DSP ~ is stunningly beautiful. This particular sheet is the other side of the butterflies that can be die cut with the Butterfly Dies. :O) I kind of hated using this for the background, considering… but I did. You will also notice a Box Lid Shim that I have made so the lid fits snugly. I’ll share info about that later. In the meantime, here’s a side view photo.

Butterfly Card Box – #2

You can clearly see in the photo above, the base is also covered…

Butterfly Card Box – #3

The finished size of the box base is 4 3/4 x 6 x 1 1/2. With the lid on, just add an additional 1/8″ to each dimension: 4 7/8 x 6 1/8 x 1 5/8. I used Pretty Peacock for the box base for a couple of reasons – it’s a retiring color come May, and I want to use the paper. It still coordinates nicely even though it isn’t listed as one of the colors recommended. For the box lid I used Basic White Thick card stock.

  • Cut your card box base to 7 3/4 x 9 and score on all sides at 1 1/2″. Burnish all score lines.
  • Trim as shown in photo and add Tear & Tape
Card box bottom

HINT: Please notice I cut and trimmed on opposite sides of the box, so the folded ends would support the longer side of the box, giving it more strength. Note, I cut straight up to the score line, then trimmed a wedge from the end portion only and both sides of the end

  • Decorate your box with two layers: card stock then DSP. For ease, layer the DSP to the card stock, then to the card box itself.
    • card stock layer… 4 5/8 x 1 3/8 (2); 5 7/8 x 1 3/8 (2)
    • DSP layer… 4 5/8 x 1 1/4 (2); 5 7/8 x 1 1/4 (2)
    • For the box bottom I had the card stock and DSP the same length
    • Adhere these with liquid glue as there is wiggle room to get it straight and even.
    • It’s much easier to decorate the box when it’s flat.
  • Remove the Tear & Tape covers and fold in ends.
  • Decorate the inside if you so desire – and I did… slightly less than 4 3/4 x 6
Box Card Base

Box Top…

  • Cut Basic White Thick card stock 6 3/4 x 8. Notice this is exactly one inch small than the box base cuts.
  • Score using the Box Lid Shim @ 1″ on all sides.
    • The Box Lid Shim allows the lid to fit snugly with just a hint of allowance. If not using the shim, the lid will be too snug and the sides of the base bottom will dip in. Find directions for the Box Lid Shim on a Connie Stewart video from some time ago. It is made from Window Sheet, scored and card stock folded over one side for perfect spacing.
  • Burnish all score lines, cut & trim the same as for the box bottom. Add Tear & Tape
  • Decorate the box top: card stock 5 7/8 x 4 3/8; DSP 5 3/4 x 4 1/2. Adhere these two together with liquid glue, then add to the top of the box.
  • Decorate the sides:
    • Card stock layer 5 7/8 x 7/8 (2); 4 5/8 x 7/7 (2)
    • DSP layer 5 3/4 x 3/4 (2); 4 3/4 x 3/4
    • Adhere DSP onto card stock with liquid glue, then to box sides, also with liquid glue
  • Remove covers on Tear & Tape and fold ends in – voila!

Final decoration for the box top… I used three layers of card stock

  • Pretty Peacock 3 1/2 x 3 1/4
  • Just Jade 3 3/8 x 3 1/8
  • Basic White 3 1/4 x 3
  • Stamp the sentiment on the Basic White panel, The sentiment comes from the Lovely You stamp set. Adhere butterfly die cut from the Butterfly Bijou 6×6 DSP with the Butterfly Dies, with liquid glue. Add dimensionals under wing tips. Add three small Matte Black Dots to the body and two large Matte Black Dots below the sentiment.
  • Adhere the Basic White panel to the Just Jade panel with liquid glue.
  • Adhere the Just Jade panel to the Pretty Peacock panel with dimensionals.
  • Adhere the Pretty Peacock panel to the center of the box top with liquid glue – and woohoo! Your box is complete and ready to fill.

I love this box! It is just beautiful and it’s sturdy – I hope you like it too. Now, let’s talk about these beautiful papers, coordinating stamp set and dies. Stampin’ Up! Sent with Love, Pretty Perennials

Today is President’s Day! What does that mean to you? What I think of is Abraham Lincoln… and hubby just finished reading a book titled Abe that was really good. He was an amazing man and an incredible president. If you like history – this is an excellent read. I have my hands wrapped around the book Eleanor right now and keep learning how incredible she was as a First Lady of our country. These thingsd have nothing to do with today’s card, so maybe I should just get on with it…

Sent with Love, Pretty Perennials – #1

Can you see in the photo the embossing on the card front? I’ve used two folders, one for the DSP and another for the Basic White card stock. They come together and are called Meadow Moments Embossing Folder. Here’s better photo to share the delicasy of these two.

Sent with Love, Pretty Perennials – #2

I think you can see the embossing better, right? So delicate and beautiful. And here’s how I put this card together…

  • Emboss the Butterfly Bijou 6×6 DSP with the leaf portion of the Meadow Moments Embossing Folder set.
  • Emboss the Basic White panel with the floral, butterfly and leaf portion of the Meadow Moments Embossing Folder set.
  • Adhere the DSP strip to the Basic White panel with liquid glue.
  • Add the Just Jade 20-22 In Color Ribbon by wrapping to the back and hold in place with Stampin Seal
  • Die cut the flower from Hydrangea Hill DSP and the petals for the flower in Basic White card stock. Adhere the flower together with liquid glue and a mini dimensional. Add an Opal Rounds to the center. (Truth be told… this flower was sitting on my desk from a previous project and I liked the color contrasts of the green and pink.😊)
  • Adhere the flower to the card front with a dimensional.
  • Also sitting on my desk was this butterfly die cut with the Butterfly Dies (new product! this will be available in the 2021 Annual Catalog.) I adhered this butterfly with dimensionals as well.
  • Stamp the sentiment with Memento Black ink on Basic White card stock and die cut with the Potted Succulents Dies. The sentiment comes from Itty Bitty Greetings stamp set. I attached the sentiment to the card front with dimensionals and trimmed the end.
  • Adhere this panel to another layer of Basic White card stock for strength then to the Thick Basic White card base with dimensionals ~ and your card front is done!
Sent with Love, Pretty Perennials – #3

For the inside… I wanted to carry both the green and pink to the inside so adhered a strip of the same Butterfly Bijou 6×6 DSP (new product available soon to customers!) to the right side of the Basic White panel. I die cut another flower with the Perennial Petals Dies, this time from the Paper Blooms DSP (FREE during Sale-a-bration with a $50 order). I also die cut petals from Basic White card stock and a scrap I had on my desk of…. for the center of the flower. All were adhered together with liquid glue and another Opal Rounds was added as well. This was adhered to the inside of the card with liquid glue. This Basic White card stock panel was adhered to a Mint Macaron piece then to the inside of the card – all with liquid glue. and the inside was complete!

Sent with Love, Pretty Perennials – #4

For the envelope… I adhered a panel of the Butterfly Bijou 6×6 DSP to the envelope flap and trimmed it to fit. For the front of the envelope, I stamped the flower background from the Pretty Perennials stamp set, in Roccco Rose ink stamped off once, then the detail flower stamp in full strength Rococo Rose ink – and the card was finis!

This card is so versatile – it could easily be a sympathy card or birthday or simply thinking of you, depending on if you stamped something special inside. I like that it is cheery and bright too.

Stampin’ Up! Coordinating Annual Catalog Product with Jan-Jun Mini Catalog

Hello again… it’s snowing… ever so slightly. We are just on the edge – and I confess, I like snow. So for me, let’s have some!

Today is Inauguration Day – and we are just a bit anxious about it… violence is just so non-sensical and unnecessary. Our prayer today is for peace, not only in Washington, but in our entire country – as well as the world. Regardless of your politics, please pray for peace.

Today’s card is extra fun – a card on a card, using a new stamp set called Suite Sampler. It is a HOST reward set and may be found on pg 88 in the Jan-Jun 2021 Mini Catalog. Feel free to contact me to see how you may get this set! (LOVE this dragonfly!) I have paired this with one from the Annual Catalog called Sending Sunshine, for the sentiments. Here’s a photo…

Coordinating Old/ New – #1

Isn’t this dragonfly beautiful? Products used in todays project… listed in two columns…

Yep – more product from the Annual Catalog for sure, but how can you resist that dragonfly?

Here’s a picture of the inside… and yes, this is a card on a card, but not really as the the card base is flat; it does not open.

Coordinating Old/ New – #2, inside

These leaves look so great with the Designer Series Paper. Did I mention this paper is FREE with a $50 purchase during Sale-a-bration? Woopie! Sale-a-bration goes to the end of February folks, so don’t waste your precious time. It’s a wastin’…

Stampin’ Up! Peaceful Moments and Painted Poppies

This card is made with the Stampin’ Up! Painted  Poppies stamp set AND the Peaceful Moments stamp set for the sentiment. This is so bright and cheery – it would definitely lift someone’s spirits! I’m feeling so much better today after being a bit punky with a cold all week. Even went to the gym and did the eliptical for 25 minutes! YAY!! But on with the card. Here it is…

Here are the details…

  • Thick Whisper White card base cut to 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
  • Layer Lovely Lipstick  4″ x 5 1/4″
  • Cut Whisper White 3 3/4″ x 5″; stamp the single poppy from the Painted Poppies stamp set in the middle of the card with Tuxedo Black Memento ink, then stamp the string of Poppies in Tuxedo Black Memento ink so they surround the larger poppy.
  • Using the second largest circle die, cut out the center. Using both light and dark Poppy Parade Stampin’ blends, color the poppies that were cut from the circle. Notice I left many of the tips of the flowers without color. I think it makes them look more real, plus it gives them depth.
  • Using the largest circle die, cut a circle in Poppy Parade. Adhere the Painted Poppies circle to the Poppy Parade circle using liquid glue. You could put this section on dimensionals and it would look awesome too. I simply chose not to.
  • Adhere this entire poppy design to the Lovely Lipstick paper using liquid glue.
  • Take a piece of Real Red ribbon about 7 1/4″ in length and wrap around both these pieces. One way to keep it in place is to use snail directly to the ribbon then lay it on the paper. Works like magic! And if you use the grid paper while placing that ribbon, it will be super straight – works every time. Take another length of ribbon, make a bow and attach in the center with a glue dot.
  • Put dimensionals on the back of the Lovely lipstick and adhere to the thick Whisper White card base.
  • Take a Whisper White scrap, stamp the sentiment from Peaceful Moments in Tuxedo Black Memento ink and trim the ends as shown. Add dimensionals to the back of the strip and adhere to the card front. Voila!!!

I’ve used three shades of red on this card (Lovely Lipstick, Poppy Parade and Real Red) and they look great together – at least I think so. Stampin’ Up! does such a good job of coordinating their colors that it is easy to combine various shades of one color. After all – it’s what Mother Nature does 🙂

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you like this Painted Poppies card. It was extra fun to create. Want to join me in creating cards? Please contact me at TLsBrightSpot@gmail.com. It’s always more fun to have a partner with whom to brainstorm, connect and create.

Remember that Sale-a-bration ends March 31 with all those free products. It will still be possible to order from the catalogue until Jun 1 but all those freebies ends Mar 31. Just sayin’.

When you order from me, please use the current HOST CODE: XYW2SYNV. With a purchase of $50, you receive a free item of your choice not to exceed $10. Just let me know what that item is so I can place the order and get it on it’s way to you. One item per customer per month please. Thank you!

May you have a beautiful day. Make someone happy by sending them a handmade card.
